TOMORROW: Peel SCIA MTO Workshop – “Farm equipment & the rules of the road”

Spring seeding is just around the corner. Make sure you are familiar with the rules of the road for farm equipment and trucks before you hit the road with your equipment to head to the fields this year.

Join the Peel Soil and Crop Improvement Association and Sam Hardie, an Enforcement Program Advisor with the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) as he reviews and updates our membership on these rules. These MTO update and information sessions have proven popular when hosted in other municipalities and we are confident our SCIA members won’t want to miss this opportunity.

EVENT: Landowner Leader Workshop – “Caring for Carolinian Habitat”

Landowner Leader Workshop: Caring for Carolinian Habitat on Your Farm
Quality Inn and Suites, Woodstock
Wednesday, March 27th, 2013
8:45 AM to 3:30 PM

FACT: Over 95% of land in southern Ontario is privately owned – and much of that is in agricultural production. But farmers also own woodlots, abandoned fields and other natural habitat. That means that folks like you are a key to ensuring the conservation and protection of wildlife, including species at risk, and their habitats on the landscape.

  • Are you a farmer in southern Ontario?
  • Do you have a woodlot, wetland or other natural habitat?
  • Do you enjoy nature on your property?
  • Have you ever wondered how to create a wetland for frogs and turtles? Or build a snake hibernaculum? Or make your woodlot or farm more inviting to forest-nesting birds?

If you answered yes to any or all of the above you may be interested in the Carolinian Canada Coalition’s Landowner Leaders Program, an initiative that proactively assists landowners in southern Ontario to create, protect and conserve habitat for the province’s Species at Risk.

AGENDA

  • The Endangered Species Act and What It Means to You – TBA, SAR Biologist, MNR – Aylmer
  • A Primer on Species at Risk and Their Habitats – Ben Porchuk, Ecologist, Carolinian Canada
  • Developing a Carolinian Habitat Action Plan for Your Land – Bernie Solymár, Carolinian Canada
  • The Alternative Land Use Services Project – Chris Vvan Passen, Chair, Alternative Land Use Services
  • The Species at Risk and Grassland Farm Habitat Incentive Programs - Christine Schmalz, Programs Coordinator, Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association
  • Landowner Leader Panel: Habitat Projects on My Farm - Jim Rule and Steve Timmermans
  • Managing Woodlots for Birds - Ken Elliott, Ministry of Natural Resources, London
  • BMPs for Grassland Birds at Risk - Christine Schmaltz, OSCIA
  • Badgers and Farmers: A Beneficial Co-existence - Josh Sayers, Biologist, Ontario Badger Recovery Program

Local conservation authorities, stewardship councils, farm organizations and other conservation groups will be on-hand to describe the types of technical assistance they can provide, and what financial and tax incentives are available to you as a private landowner.

Cost of the full day workshop is $15/person and includes lunch, resource materials, and door prizes.

Space is limited to the first 30 registrants. Register today to secure your spot!
